YOUTH CHALLENGES PROVE EVEN MORE POPULAR IN 2010 20/07/2010

The third series of DEFENCE 2020 Youth Challenges was held around Australia in all states and territories between May and July 2010. Some 150 secondary schools were involved and 91% of attendees - students, teachers and ADF personnel - voted the series Excellent/Very Good. This year participants were challenged to explore the relevance of the Spirit of ANZAC to the ADF and Australian society today. Some of the students are now working on their Participation Tasks in the hope of being selected to represent the youth of Australia at the DEFENCE 2020 NATIONAL YOUTH CHALLENGE to be held in Canberra late September.

DEFENCE 2020 SPECIAL INDIGENOUS PROGRAM 04/06/2010

Alice Springs - Friday 4 June 2010
The DEFENCE 2020 team held a special Youth Challenge for Indigenous students at the Chifley Alice Springs Resort, Alice Springs on 4 June 2010. The theme for the day was - COULD YOU BE A MODERN WARRIOR?

Schools from the Alice Springs area and as far as Tennant Creek and even South Australia attended this special DEFENCE 2020 Indigenous Youth Challenge Program. This is part of an important educational program (being rolled out around the country) that focuses on Australia's future and the part we could all play as informed and responsible citizens.

The students represented their schools and local communities. They engaged with one another in a lively manner throughout the day. This was mostly evident in the exciting and fun role play performances that we witnessed. Well done to the winning students and groups.

The DEFENCE 2020 team wish to congratulate the students that took part in this special program. We also wish to acknowledge and thank the teachers and ADF personnel especially for your invaluable contribution to the day.

NOTHING BEATS THE REAL THING! YOUTH CHALLENGES AT WARNER ROADSHOW STUDIOS 25/02/2010

Some 250 students, teachers and guests attended the NOTHING BEATS THE REAL THING! Youth Challenges held at Warner Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast on Thursday and Friday, 11-12 February 2010. Some 20 schools in the region were represented at this exciting event.

The students worked through a program that challenged and entertained them - asking them to come to an understanding about the implications of film piracy for the sort of society they want to create. While most students (and teachers!) had at some time been 'pirates' themselves, they realised that there were considerable implications to their actions, and all agreed that it was a fair and proper civics and citizenship strategy to 'just say NO.'

Surprise guest industry presenters were Andrew Wight, co-producer of the huge 3D hit Avatar and Emily Robins and Miles Szanto - stars of the TV series Elephant Princess. They provided unique perspectives on the impact of film piracy upon their industry and their own lives.

Those students attending on the Thursday had a special treat - a tour on the set of Elephant Princess.

Judging from the evaluations, all who attended had a terrific time rating the program 90% Excellent/Very Good.

Indigenous Youth Challenge 01/12/2009

More than 70 students from St Joseph's College, Katherine High School and Wugularr School attended the Indigenous Youth Challenge held in Katherine, NT on 24 November.

The theme of the day was - What does the Australian Defence Force have to do with you?

To investigate this question the students interacted with a decision-making program, met some of the ADF's current 'modern warriors', participated in bullring activities which included guard dog and equipment demonstrations, watched a video showcasing the contribution of Indigenous Australians to today's Defence Force and then broke into workshop groups to prepare a role-play about the different roles that the ADF plays both in Australia and overseas.

The students threw themselves into the role-plays and showed us how the ADF provides peacekeepers around the globe, cares for country, helps Indigenous communities, defends the nation and responds to humanitarian emergencies.

Almost 70 percent of students rated the program as excellent and some 25% rated it very good! Typical comments on the day were the following:

I enjoyed myself very much.

It was all good.
It was fun and excellent.
Today was the best.
The day was fantastic.
Loved it. Thanks for a lovely day.
I loved learning about other jobs in the Defence Force.
I feel like coming again next year.

The team at Ryebuck would like to thank RAAF Base Tindal for hosting the Challenge and all of the ADF personnel who so graciously gave of their time to meet and work with the students and teachers from the local area.

DEFENCE 2020 NATIONAL YOUTH CHALLENGE 17/09/2009

The 2009 series of the DEFENCE 2020 - Are Australia's Peacekeepers responsible Citizens? - concluded with the National Youth Challenge in Canberra on 16th September 2009. Twenty-three students (national winners of the Participation Task competition) spent two days in Canberra visiting the Australian Federal Police training village, the Australian War Memorial, the Peacekeepers Memorial site on Anzac Parade, Squadron 34 to view the Prime Minister's jet and the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA).

At the National Challenge which was held at ADFA, the students showcased their winning entries, role-played a peacekeeping scenario, presented a video of their experiences in Canberra and were addressed by the Hon Greg Combet MP, Minister for Defence Personnel, Materials and Science and Lieutenant General David Hurley, Vice Chief of the Defence Force.

The National Challenge was a fantastic conclusion to an exciting program that educated young people about defence issues and encouraged them to think about what sort of Defence Force they would like Australia to have in the future.

Defence 2020 will be back in 2010 with a new theme, new resources and a national program that will be rolled out in all states and territories between May and July. Watch this space for details and log onto www.defence2020.info for updates, reports and curriculum resources for History, SOSE, English. Legal Studies and Geography.

The team at Ryebuck Media wish to sincerely thank all of the teachers, students and ADF personnel who have supported Defence 2020 in 2009. Special thanks to Group Captain Ken Given who continues to be an enthusiastic and dedicated project manager.

AFACT Youth Challenge 30/03/2009

Ryebuck Media was delighted to present a Youth Challenge on film/DVD piracy for the Intellectual Property Awareness Foundation (IPAF) on Wednesday 25 March.

90 students from 12 Victorian schools worked through a program that challenged and entertained them - asking them to come to an understanding about the implications of film piracy for the sort of society they want to create. While most students (and teachers!) had at some time been 'pirates' themselves, they realised that there were considerable implications to their actions, and all agreed that it was a fair and proper civics and citizenship strategy to 'just say NO.'

A surprise guest presenter was Sam Clarke from Neighbours, who described the personal impact of the issue on young actors like him. Many excited students now have photos of themselves with 'Ringo'!

A highlight was the role play advertisements that groups created to complete the communication task: to Inform, Explain, Entertain and Influence. The 9 presentations were clever and fun, and showed that students had really thought about this personal issue.

DEFENCE 2020 NATIONAL YOUTH CHALLENGE, CANBERRA 05/12/2008

On Thursday 4 December 18 2008, students from all over Australia gathered at the National Museum of Australia to present their Defence 2020 reports and findings to the Minister for Defence, the Honourable Joel Fitzgibbon.

The students were state and territory winners of the Defence 2020 Participation Task, that asked them to explore some aspect of the ADF and responsible citizenship.

The student entries varied from the past (such as Simpson's relationship with Indian troops in World War 1, and Ralph Honner's leadership on the Kokoda Track in World War 2), to the present (the work of the Department of Veterans' Affairs in supporting former members of the ADF, and the under-publicised achievements of Australian troops in Afghanistan in civil infrastructure works and nation-building).

Some students found aspects of the ADF to criticise, and several were able to test their ideas in present-day contexts: the work of the Destroyer HMAS Ballarat in Sydney Harbour, the role of the paratroop regiment 3RAR based at Holsworthy, and the efforts of the RAAF at Richmond Air Base. Students were able to question serving ADF personnel, many of whom had experience in East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan. All students recognised the great civic virtues that overwhelmingly characterise the work of the ADF today. The point was particularly brought home at Holsworthy, where several of the soldiers to whom the students spoke had worked with Australia's latest casualty in Afghanistan, Lieutenant Fussell. It was a sobering reminder of the main role of the ADF, and the reality of the sacrifice that ADF members are prepared to make for their nation.

The final presentation at the NMA saw the students able to report on their work, discuss their findings during their three-day program, and band together to present a role-play about the ADF's achievements and responsibilities as a peacekeeper and an ally.

Defence Minister Fitzgibbon, Minister for Defence Science and Personnel Snowdon and Vice Chief of Defence General Hurley all enjoyed and were amused by the irreverent but insightful role play, and responded to the tough questions thrown at them by the students.

The Defence 2020 program has been designed to increase students' awareness of the many and varied roles and responsibilities of the ADF as a significant national institution. The nearly two thousand students who participated in the Youth Challenge series have developed a great respect for the fine civic values that the ADF sets and strives always to achieve. This increased knowledge, critical evaluation and understanding were demonstrated by the 18 student winners on the day, and all three official representatives acknowledged this in their replies to the student presentations and questions.

Defence 2020 (2008) is now over. We have explored the role of the ADF as a responsible citizen in a variety of ways. 2009 will see the dedication of the National Australian Peacekeeping Memorial in Canberra, and we hope that the focus of Defence 2020 (2009) will be on Australian peacekeeping, and especially the role that the ADF is playing in modern day peacekeeping and peacemaking in Afghanistan and other areas.

Watch out for details early in 2009!

RYEBUCK WINS AT 2008 NSW PREMIER'S HISTORY AWARDS 28/10/2008

Ryebuck Media is delighted to announce it has won a prestigious 2008 NSW Premier's History Award. The award is offered annually to honour distinguished achievement in history by Australians.

Ryebuck's Australians in the Vietnam War: Home Front and Combat written by Robert Lewis and Tim Gurry was chosen from a very strong field of finalists in the category Young People's History Prize.

Both the finalist nomination and actual award are a strong recognition of the quality and diversity of educational work being produced by Ryebuck Media. Ryebuck thanks its great professional and dedicated team who have made this win possible, and also the Vietnam veterans who trusted us to tell their stories honestly and well. We hope they are pleased with this result.

The judges commented:

"This interactive CD-ROM package introduces high school students to the combat experiences of Australians in Vietnam and to the impact the war had on Australian society. The Australian army’s approach to pacifying Phuoc Tuy Province is considered through an interactive strategy game, while another module provides a series of interviews by a range of participants in the war. Students are invited to consider how they would have responded to the escalating conflict, and to reconstruct the career of an individual soldier from a range of documents. Robert Lewis and Tim Gurry have succeeded in making creative and effective use of their medium, without compromising the historical information and skills they seek to teach. The source analysis activity is particularly impressive in modelling how historians are able to reconstruct events from different types of evidence. The approach throughout is certain to appeal to digitally savvy teenagers. Australians in the Vietnam War is an exemplary resource that sets a high standard for similar digital packages, and will provide the basis for many memorable history lessons."

DEFENCE 2020 - YOUTH CHALLENGE SERIES 10/10/2008

The Defence 2020 Youth Challenge Series has been a great success and there are only 4 programs to go. So this is your last chance to register for the Northern Territory and Western Australia challenges.

The program's theme is - Is the Australian Defence Force a Responsible Citizen?

To date Challenges have been held in Albury-Wodonga, Adelaide, Port Pirie, Sydney, Newcastle, Canberra, Launceston, Hobart, Melbourne, Townsville and Brisbane.

Almost 90% of approximately 900 participants (students, teachers and ADF personnel) have adjudged the program Excellent or Very Good! Go to the DEFENCE 2020 website to see all the latest photos and evaluations.

This teacher's comment summarizes the overwhelming response:

"On the way home on the train the students told me that they had a great time. They thought it was a good mix of serious issues and a lot of fun, especially the role plays, which allowed them to express themselves. It also made them more aware of the issues that the Defence Force faces - so they really did come out of it with a greater sense of their civics and citizenship role in our society. Well done!"

Ryebuck Media's Youth Challenge 2007 14/06/2007

Ryebuck Media and the National Museum of Australia education section have just completed their series of Youth Challenges on 'The Mysteries of Maralinga', arguably Australia's major Cold War activity.

Challenges were conducted in every capital city, to 93 schools, 102 teachers and 775 students.

The program took students through a variety of sessions that stressed historical skills as well as content about Australia's atomic testing program of the 1950s.

Four key aspects emerged:

  • students were fascinated to learn the details of this historical event, such as that Australia was only the third place ever where atomic weapons were exploded;
  • they saw how they successfully exercised their critical, analytical and empathetic skills to explore the issues;
  • they identified the continuing relevance of many of the concepts involved to their own society today;
  • and they realised very strongly that history is about real people.

Students were overwhelmingly positive in their evaluations of the day - 84% of them rated it as Excellent or Very Good, and 98% rated it Good or better. Teachers were even more enthusiastic, realising how effectively the program can be transferred to other situations within their own classrooms - 65% rated it excellent, 96% rated it Very Good or better, and 100% rated it Good or better.

Details of the evaluations, and many student and teacher comments will be posted soon. Photos from each of the Challenges will also be made available on the official Australian History Mysteries website.
